About

Greener times ahead for the BetaWolves!  One of our projects is to figure out how to use sustainability for the environment as well as for our team.  In the past, only the construction season and two district competitions included in the average annual cost of $246 for plastic utensils, paper and Styrofoam plates, and plastic cups. If we continue to compete, perhaps into early May, that expense might quadruple.  Our modest team of 16 students and 10 mentors is only covered by the $246 (not including virtual mentors). When considering a team with twice as many members, that may equate to investing as much as $500.

What we are doing to lower our Carbon Footprint

Waterbottles

We operate in a plastic water bottle-free zone to reduce our carbon footprint. Members must bring their own reusable water bottle; a water cooler and glasses are provided if a member forgets a water bottle.

Adopt A Highway

Adopt a Highway is a 2-mile stretch where we walk and clean alongside the road. We usually split into teams of 2 walking a half mile.

Bamboo/Metal Utensils

We utilize bamboo utensils that are environmentally produced, biodegradable, and compostable during our competitions. However, we use metal plates and utensils in the lab, and students are in charge of cleaning their dishes afterward.

Orgami Wolves

We have Origami wolves in place of buttons at our competition. In contrast to buttons, these wolves may be composted.

Plastic Bench

Our partnership with ABC Promise Partnership began last year. Collecting 250 pounds of plastic to be sorted and cleaned, and then using the caps to construct a bench where we can place anywhere we like.

We have brought our community together to save their caps as well. Having classrooms bring in caps where we collect them and store them for when we can sort clean and weigh them.

Recently we took all the caps sorted them and washed them. Weighting them we calculated 125LBS so far. It was a learning opportunity to problem solve to find an efficient way to both sort and weigh.

Can Drive

The BetaWolves have a forever-long can drive going on. With our very own can bin outside our lab where people can bring there cans and bottles. We even offer to come get them if need be.

We owe a special thanks to Steve Jenkins for allowing us to store the cans and bottles in his barn. Steve has always been such a help in returning cans every time he can.
